Preventing Weather-Related Accidents: Indy Auto Man Reminds of Seasonal Tire Change

By: Get News
The IAM experts underline the importance of seasonal tire changes and explain how quality tires increase traffic safety.

Ensuring traffic safety is one of the most vital issues, especially in unsettled weather periods, when icy roads impact vehicle handling at the end of autumn. The car experts from the Indy Auto Man dealership in Indianapolis explain how seasonal tire changes can help prevent accidents.

Official statistics show that 24 percent of weather-related accidents occur on snowy or icy pavement in the autumn-winter period. Packed snow and ice are hazardous — the tires easily lose contact with the surface when braking or turning sharply on slippery and snowy roads, especially with a small radius of curvature and at high speed. The car skids or completely changes the trajectory of movement, often ending in a traffic accident.

The main characteristics of winter tires that determine their use in the cold season are a deep tread pattern, usually equipped with additional elements for traction, and anti-skid studs that increase the braking distance.

"The composition of the winter rubber compound itself is designed for use in low temperatures—the tire remains quite soft and elastic to keep contact with the track," explains Eugene Gorin, GM at Indy Auto Man. “At the IAM service station, we offer a range of high-quality tires for any road conditions, from slippery city streets to off-road.”

Winter tires have a special marking M+S, M&S, or MS, or an icon with an image of a snowflake in the outline of three mountain peaks. There are also so-called all-season tires. In regions with a mild climate, where it frequently rains and almost no ice in winter, such use of rubber throughout the year will be most justified. In addition, all-season tires are preferable on city roads.

Before installing winter tires, it is vital to define whether the old ones are suitable for use or if it is time to buy a new set. The signs to pay attention to are as follows:

The tread depth. It should exceed 2/32 in.

Uniformity of tire wear. If the difference in tread height is more than 1/32 in, the tires need to be replaced.

Tires worn equally should be on one axle. Otherwise, the discrepancy damages the car suspension and provokes skidding on turns.

Number of studs. At least half of the anti-skid studs must be in place, or tires become unsafe.

Cracks, dents, and hernias on the rubber also indicate the end of tire service life.

Universal recommendations for those who plan to change tires on a car: when fitting tires, all four must be of the same model. If the car owner chooses studded tires, they should be installed on all wheels.

Experts remind drivers that the ideal time to switch from summer to winter tires in Indiana is when temperatures consistently fall below 45°F, typically around Thanksgiving. However, the timing may vary depending on your geolocation and the weather vagaries.
