“Generation Blue Water”: A Documentary on China’s Naval Strength and Transformation

Beijing, China / TimesNewswire /  April 23, 2023 – “Generation Blue Water” is a groundbreaking CGTN documentary that explores one of the world’s rising naval powers— the People’s Liberation Army Navy. The film takes viewers aboard China’s two operational aircraft carriers, the Liaoning and Shandong, as well as its most advanced destroyer, the Type 055, to see the intensive training for blue water operations.

Part One, “The Flying Sharks,” is about the carrier pilots’ rigorous training, highlighting their dedication and commitment. Part Two, “The Blue Water Dream,” is China’s long-term vision for its naval strategy and the training of carrier pilots and creation of senior officers for its growing fleet. Part Three, “Strength for Peace,” is the PLA Navy protecting maritime security through regular drills at sea.

This 50-minute documentary is the first ever on China’s carriers and carrier-based pilots, offering unprecedented transparency on the PLA Navy. Through the personal stories and interviews, “Generation Blue Water” offers some unique perspectives on the Navy’s ongoing transformation.

The planning took several years.  Some of the individuals were in our 2019 series “Red Star, Blue Water.” Our exclusive access and extended time let us see first-hand the PLA Navy’s transformation under the Blue Water strategy. We had the opportunity to interact with pilots, officers, and ordinary sailors and cadets who shared their experiences and thoughts on being part of Generation Blue Water. They include first-generation pilots, Wang Yong and Cao Xianjian. Cao tells cadets of his near-fatal accident to remind them of the seriousness of their mission.

Our goal is to give a better understanding of the PLA Navy’s transformation through its men and women. We wanted to create a documentary with a unique style of authenticity, powerful visual effects, and artistic expression to appeal to today’s young people.
