CGTN: What’s behind Tsai’s role in Pelosi’s Taiwan show?

On August 3, Tsai Ing-wen, the regional leader of Taiwan, awarded a medal “wholeheartedly” to U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who arrived at Taipei Songshan Airport a day earlier.

After the political farce, CGTN released the feature program “Tsai Ing-wen: Her Washington Master’s Voice” to expose the truth behind Tsai’s selling Taiwan to the U.S.

Pushing forward ‘de-sinicization’

The Taiwan authorities have kept seeking U.S. support for their independence agenda. They refuse to recognize the 1992 Consensus, go all out to push forward “de-sinicization”, and promote “incremental independence”, said the program.

At the beginning of the century, Taiwan former leader Chen Shui-bian advocated a referendum on Taiwan’s future destiny at an appropriate time and stated that “each side is a country” while addressing an annual meeting of an association for people from Taiwan, in Japan.

He also challenged the UN Charter, Resolution 2758 of the UN General Assembly and the one-China principle, by repeatedly applying for UN membership under the name of Taiwan, all of which were rejected.

Since Tsai came to power in 2016, she and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities have spared no efforts in promoting “Taiwan independence”.

Politically, they have continuously elevated the level of interaction with the United States, and followed the rhetoric of the United States and some other Western nations to hype up the so-called “China threat”.

Militarily, they have been deeply involved in the U.S. “Indo-Pacific strategy,” and sought the expansion of arms sales from the United States to beef up the attempt to resist reunification by the use of force.

Relying on U.S. to seek ‘Taiwan independence’

The feature program pointed out that the DPP’s “de-sinicization” strategy has received strong support from the United States.

The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), a U.S. think tank, supports the separatist forces of “Taiwan independence,” and in return, the Taiwan authorities provide substantial funding for its research activities.

Tsai and the DPP authorities donated funds to the think tank on the grounds of “regional research” in the range of $200,000 to $499,999, according to the information published on the CSIS website.

And the U.S., has continued to maintain its “strategic ambiguity”, which seeks to deter the Chinese mainland from “invading” Taiwan and to deter Taiwan from declaring its “independence” from China.

The ambiguity is reflected in several aspects, like supporting Taiwan but not encouraging “Taiwan independence,” and acknowledging that there is only “one China” in the world, but keeping its “unofficial ties” with the Taiwan region closer.

‘Taiwan independence’ bound to fail

Following the visit by Pelosi, within less than a day, people of different ranks and backgrounds from many countries and international organizations have spoken up in various ways to condemn the provocative visit.

United Nations Secretary-General’s spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said that “the policy of the United Nations on this issue is that we are guided by General Assembly Resolution 2758 from 1971 on one China”.

Fair-minded people in the U.S. have also voiced support for China, including the renowned American columnist Thomas L. Friedman, who called Pelosi’s visit “utterly reckless” and “irresponsible”.

Meanwhile, political parties, groups, and individuals in Taiwan that oppose “Taiwan independence” and stand for reunification have expressed their opposition to Pelosi’s visit and slammed Tsai and the DPP authorities for colluding with external forces.

A survey conducted by the online newspaper udn.com in Taiwan found over two thirds of the people in Taiwan not supportive of Pelosi’s visit to the island, saying that it will only undermine peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits.

Tsai Ing-wen and the DPP authorities’ collusion with external forces to seek “independence” and provocation will only accelerate their own destruction and plunge Taiwan into the abyss of disaster, China has repeatedly warned, saying that “the U.S. has to bear all the serious consequences arising thereof.”

Shortly after Pelosi’s plane landed in Taiwan, China made “serious démarche and strong protest to the United States”, and announced that the People’s Liberation Army would conduct a series of military operations around the Taiwan island as countermeasures.

On August 5, the country added eight countermeasures, including canceling China-U.S. theater commanders talks, defense policy coordination talks, military maritime security consultative mechanism and suspending cooperation on illegal immigration repatriation, drug control and climate change.
