Confirmed Naegleria fowleri Infection Results in Temporary Beach Closure

By: WebWire

Last month, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources announced that the beach at Lake of Three Fires State Park in Taylor County would be closed temporarily for swimming. The closure is a precautionary response to a confirmed infection of Naegleria fowleri in a Missouri resident with recent potential exposure while swimming at the beach.

According to the announcement:
Naegleria fowleri is a microscopic single-celled free-living amoeba that can cause a rare life-threatening infection of the brain called primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM). The amoeba is commonly found in warm freshwater such as lakes, rivers, and ponds; however, PAM is extremely rare. Since 1962, only 154 known cases have been identified in the United States. No additional suspected cases of PAM are currently being investigated in Missouri or Iowa.

“People can become infected if water containing the amoeba enters the body through the nose,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also states that in very rare instances, infections may also occur when contaminated water from other sources, such as inadequately chlorinated swimming pool water or heated and contaminated tap water, enters the nose.”

Dedicated to helping water park operators, park districts, municipalities and health professionals identify Naegleria fowleri from environmental samples are the scientists at EMSL Analytical. Their laboratories offer rapid testing services for Naegleria fowleri utilizing highly sensitive PCR techniques that provide for extremely accurate results. These tests can be used proactively to help prevent infections and for quickly identifying sources if an infection has already occurred.

EMSL Analytical has sponsored an educational video about Naegleria fowleri that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/vLT82VMnNgQ
