From Modern Slave to Modern Woman

By: WebWire

When armies of the Union defeated the Confederacy in 1865, slavery was outlawed in America's African-American population. Her entire population could no longer be owned. It was a landmark in history through the fires of a cruel war. The large nation made it illegal to own slaves. This was not just the law, but the reality of a new world to come. Yet, the struggle for true freedom did not end there. It was simply one step in a long trail for freedom.

Alice Faye Wimberly talks about two things in her book “Freed from Slavery but Still in Bondage,” her memoirs as a child laborer in the 1940s American South. Free from the threat of slavery but still in bondage to poverty and prejudice. Her account may seem shocking, knowing that she describes a childhood that seemed almost no different from that of her ancestor's slavery. Born into a sharecropper family, she was tasked with working the fields at a very young age, depicting a harsh life that highlights many flaws and weaknesses of the sharecropping system.

But the author's tale tells more than the hardships of her childhood. It also touches upon the civil rights movement. Alice Faye Wimberly soon finds work as a consultant for the very college she studied in. She is exposed to the movement, and the push for better equality for her people. The Feminism movement of the mid-20th century was also experienced by Wimberly.

The story shines as a stark reminder that great change is not as simple as signing a declaration on a piece of paper. But an active journey. Best reflected by the author's growth from a child laborer in the fields to a noted scholar and author of the modern age. An inspiring journey from start to finish.
