Key Findings by TopTutorJob Regarding the 7th Census in China

When it comes to the 7th Census in China, the recruitment team at TopTutorJob have made some interesting findings about the foreigner population within Mainland China.

NINGBO, China - June 17, 2021 - (Newswire.com)

China National Bureau of Statistics released data from a "once-in-a-decade population census" on May 11, 2021. More than 1.4 million non-Mainland Chinese, as well as foreigners, who live in Mainland China, took part in the seventh national census conducted last year. Compared to the data from the last population census in 2010 when the population of foreigners was tracked for the first time, there is a notable rise in numbers. TopTutorJob, a professional recruitment service provider of international educators in China, draws the following findings.

The Expatriate Population in China

The census covered 845,697 foreigners who are living within Mainland China. This is a significant growth compared to the 593,832 foreigners recorded a decade ago. This shows an annual growth rate of 6.11%.

Sex Composition of Expats

Regarding the above population surveyed, 47.58% were male, while 52.46% were female. The sex ratio (male to female) was 90.61, which showed a distinct decline compared with the previous data of 130.54 in 2010.

Length of Stay

Over 1.3 million expatriates (including residents from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan) have lived in Mainland China for more than a half year (six or more months), which presents an obvious upward trend compared with the data from the 2010 population census. Among them, the population living in Mainland China for more than five years has increased drastically from 250K to 600K.

Purpose of Stay

Again, regarding the aforementioned population, including those non-Mainland Chinese residents, 444,336 had moved to the Chinese mainland for employment. That shows a yearly rate of 12.64% since 2010. These numbers can be broken down further to show that an estimated 219,761 moved for educational purposes, while an estimated 419,517 came for permanent residence.

Employment has shown to be the primary reason for foreigners to come to China. The result reflects a global recognition of the development of the Chinese economy.

Although the official data does not disclose the industry distribution in which foreign employees are employed, the 2017 expat Explorer survey by HSBC provides a sufficient reason to believe that at least 30% of the employed population work in the educational sector, mostly teaching in China.

Geographic Distribution

Guangdong has the largest number of non-Mainland Chinese and foreign residents at 418,509, followed by Yunnan province and Shanghai, at 379,281 and 163,954 respectively. Several provinces saw increases in foreign population; however, Shanghai and Beijing were not among them.

Conclusion

The "reform and opening-up policy" is the fundamental reason to attract worldwide attention in the past 30 years. In the next decade, TopTutorJob hopes to see a more innovative and diversified policy for the introduction of foreign talents. This should help China's education system achieve a higher level of internationalization and face the challenges of globalization.
