Rising Filmmaker Laavanya Hunt Brings a Fresh, Multicultural Perspective to Hollywood

Paving the way for diverse storytelling – Asian stories told by Asians for Asians.

Laavanya Hunt is taking on Hollywood as a production coordinator and producer. The young film visionary brings a unique Asian perspective and a heart full of stories itching to be told.

Born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Laavanya was raised in a multicultural environment by her Sri Lankan-Tamil family. At age 8, her family relocated to Dubai, UAE, where she spent four years immersed in new cultures, languages, people, and perspectives. She spent another four years in Chennai, India, before returning to Malaysia. Laavanya says this multicultural exposure instilled in her a unique understanding of people, which she strives to reflect in her work. “Growing up was strange but interesting,” said Laavanya. “While there were challenges navigating new places, people, and lifestyles, I learned to appreciate every culture I was exposed to, and continue to do so until today.”

Laavanya desired to travel and see more of the world. Her passion led her to the film industry, and her goal became to tell diverse stories authentically. “I want to showcase our beautifully diverse culture through the films I make,” she said.  “I believe the most important aspect of being a filmmaker is to be aware of what forms you as much as what’s in front of you.”

With her heart set on filmmaking, Laavanya has jumped headfirst into the Hollywood scene. She has participated in many projects, which she describes as valuable lessons and launch pads for her rising filmmaking career. Laavanya has worked as a Testing Coordinator on HBO’s “Gray Matter” and “Project Greenlight.” She has also worked for “Grown-ish,” contributed to the groundbreaking series “For All Mankind,” and served as a testing coordinator in “Reservation Dogs.” Beyond this, Laavanya has worked with Darron Savage to spearhead the production of the ARRI-sponsored short film “Steal, Kill & Destroy” and collaborated on a short film with award-winning director Morgan A Hammen.

In 2024, Laavanya participated in projects like the 2024 Astra Film & TV Awards, successfully executed “Unreleased Live: Krizz Kaliko,” and the upcoming “The Bad Guy,” where she is credited as a producer and coordinator.

With every new project she embarks on, Laavanya gets closer to setting up her own production company. She believes enhancing diversity in the film industry starts with ensuring sufficient representation behind the scenes.
