Survivor and Coach Kelly Sargeant Leads Pageant Community in Empowering Conversation: 'We are NOT silenced!

Kelly Sargeant, sexual abuse survivor and an official communications coach for hundreds of women competing in the preliminaries of the Miss USA Pageant and the Miss Teen USA Pageant, extends an invitation to all current and aspiring pageant titleholders to join her on a Zoom call where she will be facilitating a collaborative conversation entitled, “We are NOT silenced!” This comes on the heels of the recent resignations of Miss USA’s titleholders, Noelia Voigt and UmaSofia Srivastava.

In Sargeant’s video invitation posted on her Instagram page @coachkellysargeant, she shares that many of her clients have confided in her about suffering in silence due to a variety of circumstances which include sexual misconduct. “In light of these resignations, I feel compelled to provide a platform for both inquiry and advocacy. It will be an opportunity to listen up and speak up. These ladies want to understand others’ views and express their own, which may help them in their decision making about the best possible solution for them, or if they should continue their pursuit in this pageant system.” The 1-hour Zoom call is scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 18th, at 2pm central time, and the call will be co-facilitated by Sargeant, a psychologist, and an attorney.

In 2016, Sargeant began presenting “Totally Set Free;” her victims’ assistance and prevention-education workshop to universities. Her mission is to support institutions to be compliant with laws designed to address the needs of victims and prevent future violence.  Lauren Langford, Assistant Coordinator of Student Conduct at Oklahoma State University explained, “’1 is 2 Many’ chose Sargeant to lead the workshop because of her abilities as a speaker and her experience as a survivor. The fact that she has this story makes it seem very real and very tangible. She can make students understand that things like this happen to people everywhere, whether they are on college campuses or not.”
