DESCRIPTION:

SWORDS, Ireland, November 18, 2021 /3BL Media/ - Trane Technologies plc (NYSE:TT), a global climate innovator, and the National Football League’s (NFL) Carolina Panthers are pleased to announce Clover High School as the winner of the Trane Technologies Stadium of the Future STEM Challenge.

The challenge invited students at six high schools in North and South Carolina to use their creativity and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) skills to imagine and design the stadium of the future. Each stadium had to feature a sustainable energy element, a recycling plan and incorporate school spirit into its design.

Clover High School will receive $5,000 for winning the competition. Hopewell High School finished as the runner-up and will receive $3,000 and Fort Mill High School will receive $2,000 for finishing as the second runner up. Students at East Mecklenburg High School, Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology and York Comprehensive High School also took part in the competition and will receive $1,000. The winnings were provided by the Carolina Panthers and matched by Trane Technologies and will be used to support STEM school programming efforts at the schools.

“I was extremely impressed by the creativity and attention to detail the students put into the design and construction of their stadiums,” said Ray Pittard, Trane Technologies’ executive vice president, supply chain, engineering and information technology. “I was delighted to see the unique ways the students incorporated sustainability elements into the stadium’s design. I want every student to know just how difficult it was to pick a winner and they, and their teachers, all should be proud of the work they did.”

“These students are the creators of tomorrow. We hope this experience will increase their curiosity and ambition when it comes to pursuing a career in fields that incorporate STEM skills and sustainability” said Paul Camuti, Trane Technologies’ executive vice president and chief technology and sustainability officer.

To assist them with the project, student teams were partnered with members of Trane Technologies’ Accelerated Development Program (ADP). The students and ADP’s met regularly to ask questions, share thoughts and ideas and provide feedback with each other. For example, the students at Clover High School couldn’t decide if they wanted to power their stadium by using hydroelectric or geothermal energy. Trane Technologies’ ADP’s suggested benefits for hydroelectric energy due to the stadium’s proximity to Lake Wylie and that geothermal energy isn’t widely used on the east coast of the United States.

In addition to being powered by hydroelectricity, Clover High School’s model stadium also featured a working jumbotron and Wi-Fi network that the judges and spectators could access during the event. The stadium’s location on Lake Wylie also allowed fans to “sailgate,” which meant they could enjoy the game from a boat in the middle of the lake.
