Vitamin D and Its Role in the Prevention of Burnout

A comprehensive scientific review

Sterling, VA, October 25, 2024 — Psychosocial stressors currently create demanding demands at work, producing an imbalance in physiological and psychological mechanisms in workers, causing a deficient individual-environment adjustment, associated with genetic factors called stress, affecting the health of workers and directly their organizational condition and lifestyle, family, work and social. This set of symptoms and signs reflects emotional exhaustion, anxiety, depression, fatigue, indifference and guilt, producing a negative evaluation of personal activities and achievements in the work and social environment. There are scientific studies that show that optimal levels of Vitamin D in the body can prevent the appearance of psychological disorders.

Vitamin D is involved in neurobrain functions, facilitates the conversion of tryptophan into serotonin, the deficiency of this neurotransmitter is related to psychological disorders such as depression and anxiety

In addition, vitamin D has anti-inflammatory properties that help prevent a prolonged impact of chronic stress. Stress often induces an inflammatory response in the body, which aggravates symptoms of emotional and physical exhaustion. By reducing inflammation, vitamin D offers a protective effect against exhaustion and, above all, helps to increase the body’s resistance to stress.

Recent Research

They have recently provided more direct evidence that speaks to the connection between vitamin D and mental health, revealing important connections that highlight the potential role of a nutrient in the prevention of burnout. A seminal study conducted by researchers at Harvard University indicated the correlation between vitamin D levels and different burnout symptoms in workers. The results indicated that those with low vitamin D levels were considerably more likely to suffer from burnout symptoms compared to those with much more adequate levels. This study indicated the importance of always maintaining optimal levels of vitamin D, not only for bone health, but also for emotional stability and especially stress management.

In this way, research published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry explored the different effects of vitamin D supplementation on depression symptoms in individuals with vitamin D deficiency. This study described that vitamin D supplementation led to a significant reduction in different depressive symptoms. Considering the overlap between depression and burnout, this indicates that vitamin D could be an important component in both the prevention and management of burnout.

To highlight these findings even more, the master’s project in occupational health and safety carried out at the University of the Americas (UDLA) in Ecuador indicated the objective of establishing the prevalence of burnout syndrome and especially the relationship with vitamin D levels among employees and VITE Medical Supplies between May – July 2023. In this study, Maslach Burnout Inventor tools, sociodemographic questionnaires and lifestyle assessments were implemented, together with measurements of vitamin D levels, through chemiluminescence methods. These results indicated that 26% of the population presents symptoms of burnout with a statistically significant correlation between sufficient levels of vitamin D and burnout.

This study found that women in particular demonstrated very high levels of emotional exhaustion (42.8%), high personalization (38.1%), and low work efficiency (42.9%). Maintaining the indicated levels of 25 (OH) vitamin D is crucial to prevent depression.
