Which Test is Best? OB-GYN Lauren Streicher, M.D. Offers Expert Advice on Selecting Pregnancy Tests

With many pregnancy tests on the market, purchasing the right test can be overwhelming. Lauren Streicher, M.D., OB-GYN, clinical professor at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, addresses the most common questions about purchasing pregnancy tests, providing expert insight on which test to choose.

“Women should be aware that even if they use contraception, pregnancy can occur. Fifty percent of unplanned pregnancies don't result from a lack of contraception but rather from contraceptive methods failing,” states Streicher. “When speaking to patients, I find there is still a lot of confusion as to which at-home pregnancy test is right for them. Whether actively trying to conceive or not, having access to accurate and reliable pregnancy tests can alleviate any uncertainties.”

Dr. Streicher sheds light on the following considerations regarding purchasing at-home pregnancy tests:

How do at-home pregnancy tests work?

Pregnancy tests detect human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), the hormone produced by the placenta during pregnancy that is found in urine. hCG can appear around 10 to 14 days after conception and levels typically double every 72 hours until peaking at eight to 11 weeks of gestation. After taking the pregnancy test, results will appear indicating whether hCG is present.

What is the difference between digital and analog tests?

Traditional analog tests display results as lines or symbols. Digital tests provide a clear "yes" or "no” result. Some individuals prefer the simplicity and ease of use of digital tests while others may be more comfortable interpreting standard analog results showing one or two pink lines. It is really a matter of personal preference.

Which tests are the most accurate?

When selecting a pregnancy test, accuracy is imperative. While the majority of pregnancy tests boast over 99% accuracy, opting for a test with heightened sensitivity levels can detect lower concentrations of hCG hormone, potentially allowing for earlier detection of pregnancy. The First Response Early Result pregnancy test is the best for early testing as it can detect a pregnancy six days sooner than a missed period.

How long does it take to get results?

Most tests take three minutes after urination for results to appear. Fortunately, First Response Rapid Result shows results quicker – in one minute on the day of a missed period or any day after. It’s important to note that delaying the check of your result beyond the time indicated on the packaging could potentially result in an inaccurate reading.

Do pregnancy tests expire?

Yes, pregnancy tests generally have a shelf life of one to three years. These dates are typically stamped on the carton as well as the individual packaging for each test. It's crucial to check the expiration date before using a pregnancy test as expired tests may not provide accurate results due to the degradation of the chemicals used to detect hCG.

“While there are many options on the market, choosing a pregnancy test that works for you and your lifestyle is extremely important,” adds Dr. Streicher. “Please make sure to consult with your physician regarding any inquiries you may have about pregnancy testing. They can provide guidance on next steps and options, using their expertise to offer reassurance and peace of mind.”
